Immediate Permanent Pier Shoring Design for Newark Liberty Airport Piers
Urbantech provided immediate permanent pier shoring design services for Pier N19, Pier 4 & N2, Pier 4 at Newark Liberty Airport. Following an inspection program that identified deteriorated concrete piers supporting the concrete box beam superstructures, Urbantech was contracted to design a permanent shoring solution.
Working closely with the client, Urbantech evaluated multiple options to determine the most effective shoring scheme for replacing the damaged prestressed cap beams. The chosen solution involved installing steel members alongside the existing concrete cap beams. This approach minimized traffic disruptions during construction and facilitated the future removal of the concrete beams.
The permanent steel shoring system design encompassed:
Steel angle columns at the corners of existing concrete columns
Steel brackets and seats
A new steel cross beam
Elastomeric bearings beneath each box beam
To further support the project, Urbantech provided construction support services, including structural reviews of the contractor's proposed construction methods and jacking operations for installing the new cap beams. Urbantech's innovative solution enabled the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) to quickly and permanently rehabilitate the piers without impacting airport traffic.
