UrbanTech provided construction engineering services for the $743-million Bayonne Bridge Navigational Clearance Program (BBNCP), a project imple, emted to increase navigation clearance to accommodate a new breed of Panamax ships which cannot pass beneath the old 151 feet high main span roadway.
UrbanTech was retained by Skanska-Kiewit JV for construction engineering services in the reinforcement and reconfiguration of the existing steel arch structure to install a new roadway 65 feet above the existing roadway.
UrbanTech’s engineering scope included the design of a load transfer system to unload the existing suspenders and transfer the load into two temporary transfer trusses, as well as erection procedures for the installation of the raised bridge roadway and approach spans. Detailed finite element analysis was performed to integrate the load transfer truss with the global bridge model to compute deflection of the bridge structure and transfer truss under jacking load and traffic load.
