VN-84AX RECONSTRUCTION AND REHABILITATION

OF THE UPPER-LEVEL APPROACH DECKS AT THE

VERRAZANO-NARROWS BRIDGE

Working as a subconsultant for the HNTB/WSP joint venture, UrbanTech performed several supporting tasks for the design and construction support of this project.

UrbanTech provided comprehensive engineering services for infrastructure improvements on Staten Island and along the I-278 corridor. Our contributions included:

  • Sign Structure GG26 Relocation: On Staten Island, we designed the relocation of sign structure GG26. This involved designing a moment slab with a parapet blister to support one end of the relocated structure, and a spread footing foundation extension for the other end.

  • Open Road Tolling (ORT) Gantry Design: UrbanTech performed the structural design for six Open Road Tolling (ORT) gantries spanning 75' to 117' over the I-278 Eastbound Upper Level. These monotube structures, constructed from 24" diameter steel pipes with flange splices, provide support for tolling and electronic equipment.

Construction Support Services

During the construction phase, UrbanTech provided critical support services, including review and analysis of contractor submittals for:

  • Concrete deck demolition

  • Steel erection

  • Concrete deck reconstruction

  • Multiple jacking procedures

  • Temporary structures for bearing replacement of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge approach spans
